Saint Gobain Abrasives

The 42 members of Unifor Local 12 at the Saint-Gobain plant in Plattsville, Ont., have been on strike since July 24, after the company failed to make a fair offer. The members manufacture high-performance abrasive products and are fighting for decent wages and secure pensions that recognize their contributions to the company, including the many workers who have spent their entire careers at the plant.

Pickering, Ajax and Woodbine Casinos 

Nearly 1,000 members of Unifor Local 1090 are in labour disputes at three Great Canadian Entertainment properties in the Greater Toronto Area. About 100 security officers working at the Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto (formerly Casino Woodbine), responsible for creating a safe gaming environment for patrons, were locked out by Great Canadian Entertainment on July 23.  Another 900 members at Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort began strike action on July 31. These members work throughout the properties, including on the gaming floor and in cash cages, food and beverage, housekeeping, transportation, and shipping and receiving. Together, the casino workers are fighting for fair wages, job security and working conditions that keep pace with the cost of living.

Coast Mountain Bus Company
Nearly 5,200 transit workers at Coast Mountain Bus Company began escalating job action in Metro Vancouver on August 17. Members include approximately 4,100 transit operators represented by Local 111 and 1,100 SeaBus, community transit, Skilled Trades, service and maintenance workers represented by Local 2200. Members began action with a uniform ban designed to make the dispute visible without disrupting bus, SeaBus or community shuttle service. They are fighting for fair wages and improvements to the day-to-day realities of transit work, including realistic running and recovery times, health and safety protections, reliable washroom access, and dignity in retirement.

BC Transit
The 725 BC Transit workers in Victoria, represented by Unifor Local 333-BC, began job action on August 17 with a uniform ban that allows service to continue without disruption. After more than a year of bargaining, members, who voted 97% in favour of strike action, are fighting for fair wages and improved working conditions, including how much time operators have to complete a route and recover between trips.

Veolia Canada

The nearly 40 members of Unifor Local 433 at the Metro Vancouver waste-to-energy facility in Burnaby, B.C., began strike action on August 25, after Veolia Canada demanded contract concessions. The members are steam engineers and other skilled trades workers who operate and maintain equipment that converts municipal waste into electricity. They are fighting to defend the status quo against an employer looking to cut costs at workers' expense, even though Veolia holds the municipal waste contract for four more years and its costs are largely fixed over that period.
