Recommendation No. 4: Protect Canadian Jobs Bargaining Program

Over the course of this year, Unifor redeveloped and updated its bargaining program, focusing on the pressing issues members face. The program was shaped by members' lived experiences, our challenges and successes at the bargaining table, and the valuable insights from local union leadership.

What was clear from those who informed the program is that we find ourselves in challenging times. The U.S. trade war, artificial intelligence, political polarization, and economic uncertainty are posing unique risks to how and where we work and live.

Collective bargaining continues to be the most powerful tool workers have to confront these challenges directly. It is a transformative process capable of correcting power disparities in society, tackling the daily challenges faced by members, and safeguarding jobs that are essential. Every bargaining session offers a fresh chance to improve conditions for Canadian workers.

As Unifor National President, I recommend that:

  • Unifor delegates endorse the union’s new national Collective Bargaining Program – along with any agree-upon amendments – as presented and debated at the Canadian Council in Ottawa;
  • Unifor continues to develop resources to support local unions, bargaining committees, and national representatives heading into bargaining, and to monitor how successful we are in bargaining the recommendations outlined in the program;
  • That local union leadership circulate and communicate the Collective Bargaining Program to bargaining committees and the broader membership.
